This course builds upon concepts and strategies learned in our introductory courses, giving you a chance to explore the practical challenges of Teaching for Understanding. Using the unit you have previously planned, we will look at ways to refine your practice and implement new strategies to keep students engaged and focused.
With your fellow educators, a coach, and an instructor, we will help you combine disciplinary goals and students' understanding in the classroom, exchange successful approaches and guide you through the process of continual reflection and adjustment.
We will also give you practial strategies for incorporating your educational institutions’ educational goals into your unit. (Note: Participants should have planned a TfU unit before enrolling in TfU2. Completion of either Teaching for Understanding 1 or Teaching to Standards with New Technologies 1 fulfills this requirement.)
The core questions we will investigate during this course are:
- What lessons can we learn from implementing the Teaching for Understanding Framework in the classroom?
- What are the ways we can refine our work to improve student understanding and participation?
- How can we incorporate real-life demands into our reworked units?
To answer these, we will:
- Explore the classroom strengths and weaknesses of your Teaching for Understanding unit
- Demonstrate ways of tweaking or reworking your unit to focus on students' understanding
- Give you practical strategies for incorporating your school/district's educational goals into your unit
- Collaborate with other educators to exchange successful approaches
