Basic Facts
- Since 1999, WIDE World has instructed and coached over 7,000 educators from nearly 100 countries and from 6 continents
- We've provided services to nearly 250 school districts and educational institutions--half located outside the US
- Through our participants we have reached an estimated 450,000 students
- Participants come from many different kinds of schools:
- 56% urban; 33% suburban; 11% rural
- 65% public; 35% private or independent
- Our learners work as classroom teachers and also as administrators, library/media specialists, technology coordinators, and researchers
- 55% have a Master's degree, with a growing number holding Bachelor's degrees
- Participants represent a wide range of ages, from 19-70, and a wide range of teaching experience: ¼ with 0-5 years, another ¼ with more than 20
- 81% have successfully completed their course and earned a certificate
Impact on Teaching Practice
- A 2006 independent evaluation of WIDE online courses by the Education Development Center (EDC) found marked improvement in participants' ability to apply theory to practice
- 92% of survey respondents have viewed the course content as usable in their work
- 91% to 97% have reported a positive impact on their teaching, such as improved lesson design or better assessment of student learning
- One year follow-up surveys have shown substantial, statistically significant increases in plans for constructivist, inquiry-oriented, and student-centered classroom activities
Impact on Student Learning
- 90% to 97% have reported improvements in student learning due to the course--
- improved engagement, confidence, and motivation
- taking greater responsibility for their learning
- achieving deeper understanding and producing better quality work
- After one year, 70% have viewed student improvement as "significant" or "dramatic"
Professional Collaboration
- 92% of respondents have agreed that they learned guidelines to help them assess their teaching
- 90% have agreed that they learned concepts and terms for exchanging ideas with other educators
- One year follow-up surveys have shown significant increases in use of collaborative instructional practices
Course Satisfaction
- 90% of respondents would recommend the course to a friend or colleague
- 75% have found the course better than other professional development courses they have taken
- 96% have rated their coach as either "effective" or "very effective" in guiding discussion; 92% as either "supportive" or "very supportive" in other respects
